7 Secrets Designers Won’t Tell You about Interior Styling

 

But I will! At least the basic principles  which should be followed when planning final look of your home .. and yeeeeees, you can try it right now – every day is the perfect opportunity to add this beautiful magazine-look touch to your home).

And you can use it of course  while home staging process when it helps to give a special charm to your property.  So, what is the secret?

It is simple but very effective:

small accessories, flowers and natural elements arrangements, their sophisticated selection and correct placement.

Flowers soften any room and make soft rooms positively dreamy, but they can also add unexpected dimensions to modern, even industrial spaces. And what is important –  they have specific shape, color, expression – what has to be taken into consideration.

1.  THINK ABOUT PURPOSE

– What do you want to add?  What is it that your interior is missing? In my experience, there are only two ways to go around it:

–  eighter your home needs to get calmed and balanced

– or it needs to boost its vibe and drama

2. PLAN A COLOR STRATEGY

As for everything related to  interior color palette, you will never fail if you rely on the color wheel.  You already have 1 fixed color – that is the color currently dominating your interior, and what you want to do, is to find the best (and fail-proof!) color combination.

1. balanced analogous color scheme / will add pleasing serene atmosphere

Your choice will be  colors neighboring to the main color.

Tip: green/blue, yellow/orange, red/pink/violet

or

 

2. complementary color scheme / will add contrast, pop of vibrant color

Your choice will be color/s opposite to the main color.

Tip: olive green/burgundy red, yellow or orange/blue,  yellow  /violet

 

 

3. B&W or GREY = STRATEGY FOR AN ACHROMATIC INTERIOR

What to do when your interior is black&white or in grey shades – so I can not  find its complementary color on color wheel?

No problem.. you can either

– keep simple colorless look

and use natural  arrangements like wood or stones or white colored flowers..

or

– you have absolutely perfect chance to add any color to interior and to change this color, so your home can get new color scheme as often as you want!

                              !TIP:  There are few color compositions which perfectly work:                                           B&W+red, B&W+yellow, B&W+green,  GREY+pink, purple, GREY+ yellow, mustard, GREY+apple green

 

4. EXPRESSION OF STYLE

We have to remember that each flower is expressing its “personality” and style by itself, so we all somehow intuitively know that roses will best suit to a glamorous interior and help to express elegance, while raw branches will strengthen modern or loft look.

Buuut you can break this rule if you want and add some provocative element into space give it a special vibe.

!TIP:

Place soft  elegant tulips in front of exposed brick wall or sharp aloe vera in front of soft vlies wallpaper

or..

romantic  soft-shaped red bouquet in front of industrial themed chalkboard wall.

(It brings new contrasting element – rich texture into this interior.)

 

* FOLLOW RHYTHM IN INTERIOR *

Rhythm is a key design principle that encourages our eyes to move around a room in an organized way. Is is based on principles like contrast, repetition or gradation.

5. CONTRAST – STRATEGIC POSITION

When a shape or color directly opposes another, it creates contrast.

Yes,  now it is time to use flowers&accessories in complementary color.. and to place them correctly.

 

!TIP:  

yellow flowers / dark blue wall

green apples or ficus / soft red marsala paint or furniture color

 

 

6. REPETITION – Pleasant LAYERING

Use accent colors to emphasize certain elements, create focal pieces and.. allow the eye to flow smoothly around a room – in pleasant serene line.

i am often using this approach when I need to add interesting yet calming final look to client’s interior.

 

7. GRADATION – SHADES, HUES, ACCENT

This is another trick that we use very often.

It is based on repetition but creates more vibrant final look.

With gradation the size of the same objects in a room changes from small to large, or a color changes from light to dark..

and these changes are leading eye up and down the gradation line..

so interior starts to look:

more sophisticated and very attractive to the visitor.
